Lately, it seems that every sport is having a problem with their officials. Seems as though every day the top story is about how a group of officials missed a penalty, made the wrong call, made NO call, etc...Cases in point, just lately: In the MLB playoffs, there were the outs that weren't called. There were foul balls that weren't foul balls. In the NHL, there have been goals that were called no goal. (Much to the chagrin of the Wings fans, some of whom think it's all a conspiracy against them. Yeah, the NHL must just hate how much money people spend on one of the most popular franchises ever.) In the World Cup, the Henry hand-ball goal has every Irish supporter crying bloody murder. (Wait, that's pretty normal for soccer, isn't it?)But, all of this has me thinking: Is this problem really so new? Or, is it just that with all the technology (ie slow-motion, multiple camera angles, all the replays, pitch tracking, etc.) people can SEE such things now? In years past, would the majority of the sports world have even seen these calls? Without 15 camera angles and a thousand different ways to get a hold the videos, would we know that these were such horrendous calls? I don't know. Just a thought.
